Manchester
United are looking to sign Gary Cahill in January as an answer to their
defensive worries. It would be a bad decision by the Reds though. Gary Cahill
has made only six appearances across all competitions for Chelsea this season
and is expected to leave the Stamford Bridge.
The
Blues’ central defender has been below David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger in the
pecking order for the Premier League’s selection and will depart west London by
the end of this campaign.
Chelsea
will not offer a new contract to the Englishman whose deal with the west
Londoners expires at the end of this season. However, Gary Cahill has been told
that he can leave the club in January if there is a reasonable offer that comes
Chelsea’s way, as per the Metro UK
Manchester
United have been alerted by the situation and think that Gary Cahill will come
at a cheap cost given his contract situation. The 32-year-old won a Premier
League at the Stamford Bridge alongside Jose Mourinho in 2015 and went on to
add another one under Antonio Conte in the 2016/17 season.
Cahill
also admitted in September that he could leave if there are not enough chances
being given to him, he said:
‘Obviously
the most important thing is the club, but I have to look at my situation. And
if I’m sat doing what I’m doing at this moment in time, I just hope that the
club will respect that when it comes to the time.’
As
per similar claims, Aston Villa, Southampton, West Ham United and Sheffield
Wednesday are also interest in claiming the defender’s services in January.
While all of these destinations sound good for Cahill, Manchester United should
not even make an attempt to sign the 32-year-old for several reasons.
First
and foremost being his age. Cahill is 32-years-old and will 33 in December.
Second to that is the fact that he has been showing signs of decline and that
was crystal clearly visible when Chelsea scraped past Frank Lampard’s Derby
County by a 3-2 margin in the Carabao Cup. And finally, the Red Devils
certainly have better defenders than Gary Cahill at this point.
Rather
than going for the cheap and short-term option, Ed Woodward should stop being
stingy and fork out some cash for the benefit of Manchester United. What is
clear is that they need a central defender, but Gary Cahill is far from the
correct choice. As it is, Cahill will need to be replaced in 2 or 3 years so it
is best to buy a long-term player.
