Sergio Aguero named player of the month for January

Sergio Aguero has been named the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month for January while Southampton boss Ronald Koeman was named manager of the month.

The Manchester City talisman scored five goals in four games to scoop the award for the first time this season, having battled with injuries for much of the campaign.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side went unbeaten the past month, with Aguero’s brace against West Ham United earning a 2-2 draw and another double against Crystal Palace helping City to a 4-0 victory.

The Argentina international piped the likes of Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli, Southampton’s Virgin van Dijk, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel to the honour.

Aguero, 27, will look to continue in his devastating form when Manchester City take on Leicester City in a top-of-the-table clash this weekend.

Koeman, meanwhile, landed the manager of the month award after the Saints won three of their four games in January, including their second successive win at Old Trafford where Charlie Austin marked his debut with the winning goal.

Their impressive run of form has seen them climb to seventh on the log and within range of European qualification.
