On January 24, 2015, VL Magazine crowned Amarachi Joyce Mbatu the winner of their VL 2016 Beauty Pageant, but less than a month later, Mbatu was dethroned.

On their page, the magazine’s statement said, Mbatu lost her crown for failing to commit to their organisation and meet up with the brand’s requirement. It reads:

“Winner of the just concluded face of VL 2016 beauty pageant (Amarachi Joyce Mbatu) should henceforth no longer be regarded as Face of VL queen as her supposed contract was cancelled due to lack commitment, availability and not been able to meet up the brand (VL) requirements. Hence, she has been removed as face of VL queen and the first runner-up ( Damaris Obieke)  of the just concluded face of VL 2016 will be crowned as the new face of VL queen in coming days.”

But Mbatu has a different story to tell. Speaking with Lailasblog, Mbatu said she lost her crown because she refused to do the magazine’s topless shoot held outside Lagos, that it was why the first runner-up, Damaris Obieke, is now being crowned the new queen.
